From Fire Over Heaven organizer Che Chen: I’m thrilled that stars and calendars have aligned so that the fantastic Beijing bass and guitar duo, Gong Gong Gong, can play this installment of the series. They cold called 75 Dollar Bill a couple of years ago and Rick and I became instant fans of this duo’s hypnotic and single-minded rhythms. Their riff driven, drummer-less grooves are full of melodic low end hooks courtesy of bassist Josh Frank, while Tom Ng’s scratch guitar insists on a kind of percussive harmonic syncopation, his vocal style suggesting a more matter of fact (and Cantonese) version of Suicide’s Alan Vega…Another duo gracing this bill is Lucie Vitkova and Stevie May. The only other performances of Lucie’s that I’ve seen so far was a wonderfully precarious pairing of pieces at the Sunview Luncheonette; it involved singing into aluminum cans, an accordion, a small synthesizer, and a bowl of water. I’m excited to see what she and Stevie get into and her description is certainly intriguing: “We will do a clarinet and dance on crutches (Stevie) and synth, overtone flute and dance with an ax (myself)”…Last but not least, opening the night will be SF Bay Area / Philly improvising trio TONED. Members involved in the Mills College orbit (and more rock leaning projects as well) pull uncanny, concrete sounds from alto saxophone, electronics and drums…

Gong Gong Gong (工工工) is a transnational duo from Beijing, China, tapping into the spirit of Bo Diddley, the Monks, and psychedelic blues from West Africa to Southeast Asia. The group explores the concept of “phantom rhythm”: between Tom
Ng’s percussive guitar and Joshua Frank’s melodic, charging bass, an aura of ghostly snare hits emerges over a thumping low-end pulse. Atop this framework, Ng recounts Cantonese tales of absurdity, love and lust with fragmented, wry vision.
Since their first performances in 2015, Gong Gong Gong has toured China, Taiwan and Japan, performed and recorded in New York, and self-released numerous EPs including the President Piano Co. Tape 總統琴行錄音 and Rhythm n’ Drone 節奏與嗡鳴 I and II. Their first US 7” single, Siren, will be released Fall 2018 on Wharf Cat

Lucie Vítková is a composer, improviser and performer (accordion, hichiriki, synthesizer, voice and tap dance) from the Czech Republic, recently, based in New York. Her compositions focus on sonification (compositions based on abstract models derived from physical objects), while in her improvisation practice she explores characteristics of discrete spaces through the interaction between sound and movement. Recently, in her music, she has been interested in working with objects of everyday use and has done extensive work with trash. She has been nominated on 2017 Herb Alpert Awards in Arts in category of Music and she has put together two ensembles – NYC Constellation Ensemble (focused on musical behavior) andOPERA ensemble (for singing instrumentalists). During the Mentor/Protégé Residency in Tokyo (JP), she studied hichiriki with Hitomi Nakamura and has been a member of the Columbia University Gagaku Ensemble. As an accordion player, she collaborated with New York based TAK Ensemble, Kamraton, S.E.M. ensemble, String Noise, Du.0, Argento Ensemble, Ghost Ensemble, CU Raaga and Wet Ink.

stevie may is a multidisciplinary artist working primarily in movement, and incorporating sound, video, text, and textiles as well. her work is loosely centered around developing practices aimed at dismantling patriarchal values and assumptions and complicating feminism as a non-binary transfemme individual. stevie has an ongoing collaborative sound and movement practice with Lucie Vítková, has worked extensively with the Bureau for the Future of choreography, and has danced in the work of Kim Brandt, Ishmael Houston-Jones, Jennifer Monson, Tess Dworman, Caitlin Marz, Kyli Kleven, Liz Charky, and others. she has recently become obsessed with skateboarding, and is active building community with women and lqbtqia2+ folks. stevie currently works in operations at Roulette Intermedium, a non-profit music and arts organization in brooklyn, new york.

TONED is an improvisational trio consisting of Nathan Corder (electronics), Tom Weeks (alto sax), and Leo Suarez (drum set). The group deals in tightly woven intensity and fragmental communication in all ends of the dynamic spectrum. Split between the Mills College scene in Oakland, and Philadelphia, the three members of TONED have collectively worked with Roscoe Mitchell, William Winant, Jaap Blonk, and Jack Wright, as well as groups such as JITTERS, Taiwan Housing Project, Nude Tayne and wMerchandise.
