FOH180419_HenniesNaceLubelskiSpring! Fire Over Heaven is pleased to welcome upstate percussionist/composer Sarah Hennies, Philly-based guitarist Bill Nace with our own Samara Lubelski, and a solo set from another local heavy, electronics wiz, Barry Weisblat. Originally from Louisville but now based in the cold north of Ithaca, NY, Sarah Hennies has been building an intriguing body of work via a steady stream of rigorous percussion based performances and releases. Her recent ensemble performance at Issue Project Room was a real stunner, and wove together notions of transgender identity, concrete sounds and documentary film strategies in a way that was both totally unexpected and moving. She’ll be performing a piece for vibraphone and hand bells here. Bill Nace’s sound has always seemed arrestingly sculptural to me and he has been carving out slabs of sonics with many notables over the years, including Kim Gordon in their Body/Head duo, as well as Chris Corsano, Paul Flaherty, Greg Kelly and countless others. He’ll be performing here with another bright light of the sub-underground, violinist Samara Lubelski, with whom he has just made a record of string duos, and whose collaborations with Marcia Basset (FOH June ’17) or back catalog in groups like Tower Recordings and Hall of Fame will be familiar to many readers here. Last but not least, Barry Weisblat will be presenting a solo set. There’s a restlessness to his thinking that always makes his performances a little bit of a surprise but I’ve always found that his primitive electronic systems seem more like weather or a kind of ecology to me than “music”. I mean this in the best possible way, whether he is turning light or wind into sound or rattling the rafters with a sawed off casio keyboard.

Sarah Hennies (b. 1979, Louisville, KY) is a composer and percussionist based in Ithaca, NY. Her work utilizes an often grueling, endurance-based performance practice in a subversive examination of psychoacoustics, queer identity, and expressionistic absurdity. Her work has been presented in a variety of contexts including Café Oto (London), cave12 (Geneva), Ende Tymes (NYC), Festival Cable (Nantes), the Johns Hopkins Digital Media Center, O’ Art Space (Milan), and Second Edition (Stockholm) and she has composed several site-specific works for decommissioned industrial and military spaces such as Silo City (Buffalo, NY), Fort Tilden Bunker (Queens, NY) and The Monon Line Railway (Indianapolis, IN). She received her M.A. from the University of California-San Diego in 2003 where she studied with renowned percussionist Steven Schick and in 2016 was awarded a fellowship in music/sound from the New York Foundation for the Arts.

Hennies is currently a member of improvised music group Meridian with Greg Stuart and Tim Feeney, a duo with sound/performance artist Jason Zeh, and the Queer Percussion Research Group with Jerry Pergolesi, Bill Solomon, and Jennifer Torrence. In late 2017 she premiered the large-scale work, Contralto at Issue Project Room (NYC), a video/sound piece involving strings, percussion, and a cast of transgender women.

As an educator and facilitator, Hennies has directed multiple performances of Cornelius Cardew’s monumental work The Great Learning, served as visiting faculty at the Roots & Rhizomes Percussion Residency at the Banff Center for Arts & Creativity, and has lectured or given workshops at numerous universities and independent venues.

In 2013 Hennies also founded the record label Weighter Recordings for releasing her own work and other new and unusual music by living composers.

Samara Lubelski: Songwriter, Singer, Multi-Instrumentalist, Improviser, and Engineer…The list of artists (individually and collectively) that Lubelski has played/performed/recorded with, reads out like a who’s who of the art, noise, free, improv, experimental, etc. Hall of Fame, The Tower Recordings, MV and EE, and Thurston Moore are just a few to mention.

Her first solo outing, 1997’s In the Valley, was a major installment in the recorded legacy of experimental string music, a dense exploration of drones and resonance. The Fleeting Skies followed in 2004 with a full-band recording of lush psychedelic folk-rock. Since then, Lubelski has released Spectacular Of Passages (2005), Parallel Suns (2007), Future Slip (2009), Wavelength (2012), String Cycle (2014)and The Gilded, Raid (2016).

Lubelski has also studio-engineered records for Double Leopards, Sightings, and Mouthus, amongst others. Her current projects include an improvisational duo with Marcia Bassett and a long-standing collaboration with German collective Metabolismus. Additionally, Lubelski has worked with Thurston Moore on a variety of outings, including playing violin on Mr. Moore’s solo records Trees Outside the Academy and Demolished Thoughts and recording and touring with his band Chelsea Light Moving.

Her most recent collaborative album is with Bill Nace, which came out on Nace’s Open Mouth imprint in early 2018. A new solo record of songs, Flickers At the Station, will be released on Drawing Room Records in May, 2018.

Bill Nace is an artist and musician based in Western Massachusetts. He has collaborated with an extraordinary range of musicians, including Michael Morley, Mats Gustafsson, Joe McPhee, Chris Corsano, Jooklo Duo, Chris Cooper, John Truscinski, Thurston Moore, Jake Meginsky, Jessica Rylan, Paul Flaherty, Wally Shoup, and Kim Gordon, with whom he regularly plays as one half of the duo Body/Head. Their latest LP “The Switch” will be released released on Matador in July . He has been a featured musician in festivals such as ATP (curated by Jim Jarmusch and held in Monticello, NY), Colour Out of Space(Brighton, UK), Supersonic Festival (Birmingham, UK), International Festival Musique Actuelle (Victoriaville, QC), and Homegrown (Boston, MA). He has performed in a wide variety of venues, running the gamut from the Musee d’Art Contemporain (Strasbourg, France) to The Stone (NYC) to Bennington College (Vermont). Nace’s range has been described as “ veering from sculptural, almost Remko-Scha-esque chime to Loren Connors-style elegance in only a few short moves.” (Mimaroglu Music, 2010). Recordings can be found on Ecstatic Peace (Northampton, MA), Ultra Eczema (Belgium), Holidays (Italy), 8mm (Italy), Throne Heap (VA), HP Cycle (Toronto, ON), as well as on Nace’s own label Open Mouth.
